When robots take over – check out these two terrifying sci-fi novels

Robots have long been a staple of futuristic science fiction from as far back as the publication of Asimov’s laws of robotics. Whether attempting to predict or make warnings about the future or simply tell a good story, many authors have penned novels depicting a world with robots.

Here is a couple of futuristic sci-fi novels that you must read

Mockingbird by Walter Tevis

Another work of Trevis’s - The Queen’s Gambit - is receiving a lot of attention at the moment due to the hugely successful Netflix series. However, Tevis drew on some real-life observations for this 1980 novel which takes place in 25th century New York.

Tevis taught English literature at Ohio University and noticed that the literacy of his students had fallen quite dramatically. In Mockingbird, he imagines a New York where humans are so reliant on robots to the point that they have become illiterate drug addicts, unaware that the robots have effectively taken over. The absence of art and intellectual advancement among humans begins to cause angst among robots with tragic outcomes.

Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson

With such an ominous title, it’s no surprise to find out that this novel depicts a robot uprising and a human battle to suppress it. Man’s reliance on technology to run everything backfires in a deadly fashion when the machines turn against their human creators. The story is told in the form of flashbacks from the point of view of the humans who survive the terrifying ordeal.

It is an innovative format and a fresh take on the well-known sci-f trope of the man v machine.
