From cyborgs to superheroes, these sci-fi comics can be considered some of the best the genre has to offer.
The Airtight Garage by Moebius
The plot of this comic follows a conflict between the characters Major Grubert and Lewis Carnelian. Grubert created the Airtight Garage—a synthetic reality containing three levels—and is considered a god because of this. Carnelian is an old associate of his who has attained semi-deity status. This sci-fi comic is a work that defies expectation, and must be read to truly appreciate it and understand it.
Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo
Set in Tokyo 38 years after a massive explosion which sets the stage for World War III, this sci-fi comic odyssey involves teenage motorcycle gangs who clash with super-powered psychics in one of the most uncompromising visions of creative storytelling. Akira is the very definition of required reading.
Appleseed by Shirow Masamune
Appleseed stars Deunan and Briareos, a pair of SWAT officers in the futuristic, post-WWIII city-state of Olympus. This comic is choc-full of references to Greek mythology and international affairs, and is everything that good science should be.
Arcadia by Alex Paknadel
This eight-issue sci-fi comic collection depicts a world in which most of humanity is wiped out by a fast-moving pandemic, with the exception of four billion souls digitized into a simulation that offers a Utopian second life. This comic is eerily relevant and hugely entertaining.
